What Actually Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

When something goes wrong with the plumbing, it’s not always obvious whether to ring straight away or wait for morning. Here’s a straightforward way to tell — and what to do in the meantime.

At a glance

  • Real emergencies: burst pipes, major leaks, no water, water coming through a ceiling, or a gas smell.
  • Can usually wait: a dripping tap, one cold radiator, a slow drain.
  • If water is threatening electrics or the structure, treat it as urgent.
  • A gas smell is always an emergency — act immediately.

What’s a real emergency

Call without waiting for a burst pipe or major leak, no water at all, water coming through a ceiling, an uncontrollable overflow, or any smell of gas. These risk damage or safety and shouldn’t wait.

What can usually wait

A dripping tap, one cold radiator, a slow-draining sink or a running toilet are annoying but not urgent. They’re worth booking in, but you don’t need a middle-of-the-night call-out for them.

What to do while you wait

For water, know where your stopcock is and shut it off. For a gas smell, don’t touch switches — ventilate and get everyone out (see our shut-off guide).

Calling an emergency plumber

When you do call, describe what’s happening and what you’ve already done — it helps us arrive with the right kit. We’re on call 24/7, 365 days a year.

Not sure if it can wait? If you’re in South Manchester or Cheshire, call us and we’ll tell you honestly — and come out fast if it can’t.

Common questions

Burst pipes, major leaks, no water at all, water coming through a ceiling, an uncontrollable overflow, or any smell of gas — anything risking damage or safety.

A dripping tap, one cold radiator, a slow drain or a running toilet are annoying but not urgent — worth booking in, not a 2am call-out.

For water, shut off the stopcock. For a gas smell, don’t touch switches, ventilate, get everyone out and call the gas emergency line.

There’s a minimum call-out fee that’s higher after 11pm, then a fixed price agreed with you before any further work — no surprises.
