How to Prevent a Boiler Breakdown This Winter

Boilers tend to fail when they’re worked hardest — the first proper cold snap. The good news is that most winter breakdowns are avoidable with a few simple habits through the year.

At a glance

  • Book a service before the cold sets in.
  • Run the heating briefly in summer so parts don’t seize.
  • Lag the condensate pipe to stop it freezing.
  • Keep an eye on pressure and bleed radiators before winter.

Service it before winter

An annual service in late summer or early autumn is the single best prevention — it catches worn parts before they strand you and confirms the boiler’s running safely.

Keep it moving in summer

Parts that sit unused for months can seize. Running the heating for a few minutes every few weeks over summer keeps the pump and valves free.

Protect the condensate pipe

A frozen external condensate pipe is one of the most common winter shutdowns. Lagging it with proper pipe insulation greatly reduces the risk — and if it does freeze, thawing it gently often restarts the boiler.

Watch the pressure and radiators

Check the gauge sits around 1–1.5 bar when cold, and bleed any radiators that are cold at the top so the system’s ready for constant use.

Common questions

They’re worked hardest then, and a frozen external condensate pipe is one of the most common winter shutdowns.

It carries waste water from the boiler outside; in a cold snap it can freeze and block, shutting the boiler down. Lagging it greatly reduces the risk.

Thaw it gently with warm (not boiling) water — that often restarts the boiler. If it keeps freezing, it may need re-routing or insulating.
